OMG, January is over! As if!

For the last 4 years of adulting, every January, has felt like a 3 month ordeal. And yet, January 2026 is over. I can’t help but feel a little cautious for what this might mean for the rest of the year. Is it all going to fly by? Is it mysteriously going to drag later on? So, I am focussing on improving my time optimisation, so I don’t feel like I am losing my free time, to adulting life admin and work.

I love thinking and trying new ways to optimise my time (but it’s not optimal to spend too much time thinking about it lol)

Ways I try to optimise my time

  • Concrastination - The opposite of procrastination. I convince myself that If I do it now, then I don’t have to do it later.

Making future me, be thankful and grateful of past me’s actions. This is a great method to use to when I naturally have the energy to get things done and lock in.

  • 2 - 5 mins rule - This is where you start the task, and do it for 2 to 5 mins, and after that time has passed you decide if you want to continue or not.

I tend to do this with the gym. Some days, I am really not feeling it. But I use this rule, and I kid you not, sometimes after doing 3 sets of one exercise I am still not feeling it, so I go home.🤣

  • Set some bare minimum expectations - When the first 2 methods don’t work to motivate me, then I give myself grace and set a bare minimum. Because I don’t have to execute everything perfectly in that very moment. Nothing is that urgent or serious, unless it’s literally life threatening (which is not a lot of situations that tend to occur in adulting).

For example, sometimes I don’t want to tidy up (clean, wipe, dust and vacuum) around the house, but I also know I don’t want to live around the clutter. So, I do the bare minimum. I make sure the bins get outside (to prevent smells). I move items into piles (so then when I have the energy to address them, I don’t have to balance multiple things at once). I will vacuum another day because the world is not going to end, if I don’t vacuum today.

  • If all attempts fail, then I will move on to something I’m more willing to do.

Have you noticed how much longer it takes to do something, when you really don’t want to? I don’t think it’s great optimising doing that to yourself. So, just do something else, and you will probably come back to it later, and completely smash that task.

Weekly reflection:

Sometimes it seems that the world is going to implode if something doesn’t go as planned or as hoped. News flash: It’s not that serious. (unless it’s legit life threatening)

Thanks for reading and I hope you have a great weekend.
