Hey,
Sometimes I look at the bigger adults in my life when they tell me that I am such a downer about the reality of adulting, and I’m like “You can’t honestly tell me that you are enjoying this?”
Don’t get me wrong, I love the freedom to do whatever I want with my money, relatively whenever I want. I love that I am responsible for my own life, so I don’t need to be accountable to anyone other than me.
What I don’t enjoy, is the planet slow cooking us in summer, teasing me with drowning by melting ice caps and the daily discomfort that things more expensive each day, and capitalism slowly eating the supposed of adulting, and I need to pay more into it, to try and get some respite.
Being an adult isn’t as fun/cool as it seemed when we were younger, and it makes me wonder:
Am I not ok or does this actually suck, or am I doing it wrong?

Giphy - such a mood
There are days I do want to stop the world and get off
Why does it feel like there are more days of suffering than there are of joy?
And don’t get me wrong, I have hobbies, I have a social life, I keep myself busy and I take breaks. But it never feels like it stops when I sleep or rest. Like can we get an actual break?
We are in the day and age where we have access to so much information, that we are hounded with it all the time. Also, don’t even get me about how there are ads on nearly everything, and trying to tell the difference between AI and reality, is getting more annoying. It’s getting harder to find prolonged and daily joy in adulting, and it wasn’t like this for our bigger adults. And we need to acknowledge that.
I’m not saying I want to stop existing all together, but I need the break. We are expected to grind more for less. They are increasing our life spans, and thus increasing our pension age, and saying “oh you have more time to live and enjoy life” - when actually I don’t since my time, existence, mobility and health are not guaranteed, especially with what we consume daily. No matter how healthy you are, you can still contract an illness that wipes you out, so don’t tell me how to feel or react to my reality, when it doesn’t reflect the reality you experienced in your day.
Just give me an hour, so I can take a 20 minute nap. Then on either side of that nap, the remaining minutes I don’t need to think about anything. I don’t need to plan or organise or rationalise something. Just peace.
I think people are over advertising adulthood
Maybe I am still too young to appreciate why the narrative of “adulting being an enjoyable experience” is still being spread today. Because I will tell people the truth, that yes I do get money that I can spend on whatever I want. But I have bills to pay and inflation to contend with, so that money doesn’t stretch as far as I’d like it, if I want my home space to feel safe for me.
Would you say I am underselling adulting drastically, this way? (feel free to reply to the email)
