Hey,
Have you taken the time to really process how subscriptions are taking over?
Like I can overlook Spotify, been a free member since 2014, and a paying member since 2018. But my personal email which has been free since I created it when I was like 8, has now said, if I want more space, I have to pay a monthly subscription. WTF?! We have been free and working fine, for nearly 2 decades, and now you’re trying to join to subscription train?

WTF - Giphy
Yeah, subscription services are ruining adulthood.
Why can’t I pay a larger one off payment, to have access to what I want?
Are these corporations that money hungry, that they would rather keep me attached with a monthly subscription, than give me a one off payment?
Even yearly subscriptions are a joke, because now I am staggering when those payments come out so I don’t get bankrupt by these companies.
“Oh well, if I don’t pay for it, then I don’t get access to it” - People pay for subscriptions that they don’t use all the time. That’s not an excuse to feed into it, it’s just another thing to throw away money to.
When subscriptions are worth it
The only things to continue paying a subscription for, are things that are so engrained in your life, that the subscription you’re paying for, is the convenience to keep it in your life. If your reason to ‘do’ or ‘use’ something is “Oh, well I paid for it”, then cancel the subscription and find an alternative.
Take the gym for instance, if you want to get fit, check you have the motivation to keep it up. Because going to the gym is not a one off thing, it’s something you maintain for your life and mobility. So if you don’t have that motivation, then don’t subscribe. There are free and PAYG (pay as you go) alternatives to start off with.
For me, I was nearly a full amazon member (Kindle, Audible and Prime) -
I paused my Kindle and Audible for financial reasons. On Kindle they sell different books each day/month for 99p - I currently have 54 unread books that I bought for 99p each. I do not need KU, the last KU book I read was in October. (lol writing this I have just realised I don’t need to pause it, I should cancel it)
Audible, I have 4 free tokens, and 4 books that I need to refund - so I can get up to 8 books, without paying the subscription (which gives me a free token each month). I also get 15 hours of audiobooks on Spotify so that’s an extra book per month. I will reinstate Audible when all my tokens are used on books I want to keep. With how many audiobooks I consume in my day-to-day, Audible is a necessary subscription for me.
Prime, in the last 8 months I have ordered 3 times on Amazon. None of which I needed next day delivery. And the price was cheaper on other sites. So why was I paying for prime?? (it’s now cancelled)
This monetary climate is not the one to be throwing your money at things, unnecessarily. Keep your money in your bank accounts where you can. Subscriptions are disguised as being easy, but they are ruining adulting.
It’s the new tax year here in the UK, re-evaluate if your subscriptions deserve to keep taking your money, and here is to spending your money more responsibly.🥂
Have a nice weekend,
